Honestly speaking, what brand and model is your laptop? Some brands come with recovery functions while some come with recovery disk...
If you choose to reformat your harddisk, be prepared with your OS and relevant drivers for your laptop... -
Just put in the discs given and follow the instructions on screen.
If you have a Windows CD of your own, go into BIOS, set the first boot device to the CD drive. Put in the XP CD, save the settings and Windows will now prompt you to reformat.
When Windows detect a previous installation of Windows, select the Format option to format the whole C drive before installing XP, otherwise, you may face problems with Windows or it will dual boot each time you start your PC. -

Some brands like Acer allows you to recover the laptop without even needing the recovery CD.
If laptop don't have this feature, you don't have this CD, go and BUY. -

Maybe you can go to the Acer Recovery program n the laptop and see if there's any reformatting application from Acer to do the job..

Look up your ACER manual,
all acer comes with either recovery disc or a recovery program install in the hidden partition.
if i remember correctly , you should find the recovery program under the acer manager, find the eRecovery and there you go.
if you haven't boot into windows, i think during your bios boot up, press ALT + F10 to go into the eRecovery Mode. The default password is 000000
all this is based on my Acer Travelmate 3210 -
