I bought a external HDD today. The shop personnel formatted it for me in his shop and all seems fine. Then when i try to switch on at home, the HDD wont start up for some reason.
Anyone knows why it wont start up? Anyway I'm going back tml to ask them to fix it for replace it...

Using USB? There could be not enough power to the HDD.
Also, if you are using it for the first time, Windows will need to detect and install it. At your taskbar, Windows will prompt new hardware detected and is installing it. Let the installation continue. After a while it should prompt installation is completed and you can use it.
If the external HDD has a CD, please use the CD to install any required files by the HDD.

Does it come with a CD? If yes, install whatever is on the CD first.

pls provide your comp specs in detail or with your best knowledge, the ext hdd manufacturer. if its a modded ext hdd provide the mod case manufacturer and the hdd manufacturer model etc with your bbest knowledge.
there are only 2 very likely possible cases here:-
1) if u got an ext hdd that is from a mnaufacturer (OEM) and before you buy it u confirm that the specs suits your computer specs then most probably should not require any formatting at all!
2) the shop assistant somehow uses a mod case with a paradox hdd and produce an ext hdd sell it to you. during the 'formatting' stage things may have gone wrong since he should be formatting the ext hdd at your comp instead of his comp. be prepared for neumerous trips to-and-fro- and most probably more cash forging from your pockets if the situation cannot be contained within one day.
most probably i suspect your case is #2...but pls giv all the specifications so that we can help work on it. anyway i wish you luck and the next day when we wake up from our beds to see a posting from u that prob solved hehe

i myself suspect #2 also......coz its those DIY casings... so i'm hoping for the best
My comp is a Acer Travelmate 4102WLCi (laptop) complete with XP Pro
