IT NEVER RAINS but it pours. Hard and fast on the news of a Lenovo-IBM battery recall, it appears that Sony, Toshiba and Fujitsu are readying recalls too.
According to nikkei.net, Toshiba and Fujitsu will soon start a recall for lithium ion batteries made by Sony.
Sony said on Thursday it will recall batteries in its own notebook machines in conjunction with the US CSPC.
According to the wire, as many as one million units will be recalled. Meanwhile the CSPC has put together a handy little guide to notebook batteries, here. Don't put them on your lap. They're not laptops, you know.

CPSC Releases Tips on Notebook Computer Use
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Notebook computers are now a part of modern life. They can be found in offices, schools and homes across the country. There are tens of millions of portable computers in use. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aware of at least 47 incidents involving smoke or fire associated with notebook computers, from January 2001 through August 2006. To promote safe use of notebook computers, batteries and chargers, CPSC offers the following tips:
Do not use incompatible computer batteries and chargers. If unsure about whether a replacement battery or charger is compatible, contact the product manufacturer.
Computer batteries can get hot during normal use. Do not use your computer on your lap.
Do not use your computer on soft surfaces, such as a sofa, bed or carpet, because it can restrict airflow and cause overheating.
Do not permit a loose battery to come in contact with metal objects, such as coins, keys or jewelry.
Do not crush, puncture or put a high degree of pressure on the battery as this can cause an internal short-circuit, resulting in overheating.
Avoid dropping or bumping the computer. Dropping it, especially on a hard surface, can potentially cause damage to the computer and battery. If you suspect damage contact the manufacturer.
Do not place the computer in areas that may get very hot.
Do not get your computer or battery wet. Even though they will dry and appear to operate normally, the circuitry could slowly corrode and pose a safety hazard.
Follow battery usage, storage and charging guidelines found in the userÂ’s guide. -

IBM/LENOVO have recalled about 170,000 battery packs for their Thinkpad notebooks in the US.
But an additional 357,500 worldwide have been recalled too.
Sony made the battery packs. American federal org the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) said the lithium ion batteries can catch fire under certain circumstances.
Here's what the US government has to say on the matter. With serial numbers and all.

Lenovo and IBM recall 500k+ 'Zippo' batteries

Lenovo and IBM today issued a recall on notebook batteries sold with various ThinkPad models between February 2005 and September 2006.
More than 500,000 units are affected - they are powered by the now notorious lithium-ion 'Zippo' batteries made by Sony, which have a nasty habit of exploding into flames.
Last week, a Lenovo-made laptop exploded in Los Angeles airport and this presumably grabbed the eye of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is named in today's product recall.
To our knowledge, the LAX Thinkpad was the first from Lenovo to go up in flames. But reports of exploding Dell notebooks have been much more common - Dell sold the dodgy batteries for a longer period, between April 2004 and July 2006, and it also sold a lot more notebooks, period. Some 4.1m notebook batteries were recalled by Dell last month. Apple has also issued a recall, for some 1.8m Zippos.
According to Reuters, this round of battery recalls could cost Sony $430m.
