HELP!!! Laptop down!!!

My laptop suddenly started acting up for no apparent reason on Saturday. Now it appears to be officially dead. I just like to know what caused it, whether it was hard disk failure or some virus. I suspect it's the former, but I'd just like to be sure.
Ok, the first time the problem occurred I managed to restart the computer, and the error report cited these two files in my Temp folder: Mini100206-01.dmp and sysdata.xml. What are these files and what do they do? Where did they come from? Are they related to some virus?
However, now it appears that I can't even load Windows. Everytime I try the screen shows me this:
SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: Toshiba MK4025GAS-(PM)
1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing Attr : 05h)
Please back up the contents of the hard drive and run HDD self-test in F2 setup
What does this mean? Has my hard drive broken down because of normal wear and tear? Or is it due to something else e.g. virus?

It means toshiba has one more problem up their hands on top of them recalling back laptops to replace faulty exploding batteries

This looks like Windows crashed and a dump file was created. Did you had a BSOD? But never seen it in temporary files folder before.

It could have broken down due to wear and tear (if the laptop is old) or you could have knock it hard enough to spoil it. -
My laptop is only 2.5 years old. And I don't recall spilling any food or drink on it, nor did I drop or knock it. And the possibility of some insect getting inside and screwing up the works is just too far-fetched to believe...so I suppose it's just normal wear and tear...sigh...

2.5 years is already quite good for a laptop hard disk tat goes thru all those wear and tear.

Before you create a bigger problem than the existing problem, better get some technical servicing to your laptop from Toshiba...

error report cited these two files in my Temp folder: Mini100206-01.dmp and sysdata.xml.
Mini100206-01.dmp = Maybe not enough memory to run the application on yr windows. Which means when boot to windows, yr startup is loading too much software. If u're using XP, boot from CD and repair.

Maybe u have enabled the SMART options in yr NB bios setting.
Try going to yr NB's bios and set it's settings to defalut.
If not, try formating the Hdd to see if that's any bad sector but ALL DATA will be LOST!!! -
Memory dump shows that Windows crashed... it's not not enough memory...
It's also most likely a BSOD, although there could be other cases. -

The worst error in Windows.
It will say Windows will start dumping memory, that's where the minidump file comes from. Although there are other reasons for that dump file to appear. -
Wah... been using comp for ages and haven't come across this screen...

err wat model is yr toshiba laptop .. coz recently my office gt many case of Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop with faulty HDD .. send in quite alot to replce HDD

we call toshiba helpdesk .. and the only thing they tell us is send in for repair -

My laptop was a Compaq, though for some reason the hard disk is Toshiba. And yes I did get that BSOD, and I've since dumped that laptop and gotten myself a new one. BSOD got lots of reasons. Since Toshiba did warn about hard disk failure, it could be due to it.
