So my choices are the following:
1) Acer
2) Compaq
3) Toshiba (My own choice initially)
Would it be better to purchase online? or should i visit Funan, Best, Sim Lim, Harvey Norman(have been warned. I will keep this last)?

BEST should be out of the picture manz.
I'm not too sure about online purchase, but I don't trust that either. It's better to buy lap tops offline, as you can have the opportunity to have a good look at it.

depends on how u are to squeeze for cheapo freebies like free mouse, free thumbdrive, free webcam
and if u can wait, there pc show is coming up again end of the year

Hmm.. from my pass experience, I used to reinstall Windows 98 with Compaq's Quick Restore CD. Tired of using the same disk, I tried experimenting with other 'normal' discs, such as Windows Millenium, which was more advanced at that time. its the same as now...those laptops produced last year and before are definately not compatible to the up and coming vista OS... -

Acer has nice specs and it's not that expensive.
Toshiba... hmm... not sure for the new ones, but the older models are super hot.
Best and Courts is a no-no. They practically know nothing. Harvey Norman may be better, the one I've been has knowledgeable stuff. It's at Hougang Mall. Sim Lim and Funan would be good. But Funan might be too expensive.
I only know Dell does it for cash back if you order online... others, not sure. -

im using acer and i recommend acer.
they have a decent price for good graphics cards. 1gb ram should be fine enough -

i just got a hand me down IBM R31 thinkpad from the company.
since laptops aren't as upgradable as the desktop, i would recommend u buy 1 that is a high end one so that it can last for a long time.
