If like that, I need you to check a lot of things to get your wireless up. Hopefully.
Look on your right. There's a blue box which I drew. That is called a system tray. Notice 2 monitors there? It shows your connections. For LAN or wired connections, it shows 2 monitors. For wireless, there's only one monitor. Can you tell me how many monitor(s) are there if there is any?
Now, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Click on the Hardware tab. Under Device Manager, click on the Device Manager button.
A Device Manager window will open. Click on "+" sign next to Network Adapter. It should list all the network adapters installed. Write them down.
Next, I need your laptop specifications. Most laptops have stickers on them, writing the specifications down, like 512MB of RAM, 80GB HDD bla bla bla. Write it down also.
This will help us.

I spoke to tech guy. Yah, he said i need to hook up the cable. Alamak, i so kayu leh. He gave me the cable last weekend liao.
Anyways, i am going home to try it out again. but then hor, i told him my personal PC in the guest room gains access via wireless connections leh. without cable mah 'cos the router is in the basement.
the tech guy said, if that is the case, i need to install a card. install a card meh? i tot just install the software. which is which ah, mayi?

This is a wireless card for a laptop.
This is how it looks like after it is slotted in, with everything installed. The drivers will come with the wireless card when you buy it. You have to keep this card slotted in if you want wireless. -

That wireless card I show you is meant for laptops only, so cannot share with PC.
But if you are talking about sharing files with PC, yes, you can, but hor... it's another set of instructions already. Ready for this lesson? -

it worked in the office today. then took it home, i hook up to my router, got 2 monitor and it showed connection but i still can't gain access to the internet nor conduct VPN access.
called ibm helpdesk, she also cannot help me. she said maybe something's wrong with the router set up. but then the PC in the guest room works very well ley.

VPN belongs to a company. As long as you are out of the company, the VPN will cease to work, unless your company has a separate VPN which allows you to connect from home to the office.Originally posted by littlestream:

Different VPNs work differently, you have to call your company's tech support for help. It's already out of my area to help. -

i've brought the lappy back to my LRA and asked him to give me ALL the priviledges so i can have a free hand on the lappy.

i think the lappy is very restrictive so i do not have authorities to add hardware/etc and do other stuff. my goodness, the java script do not even allow me to detect any settings.
ahhh......our security dept is really doing a hell of a good job there.

heng ah *wipes sweat*...........just back from "rendevouz" with the tech guy. confirmed i not kayu 'cos we tried the lappy with an outside of bank's line and it got exactly the same message that i got when i was home.
so, he's taken the lappy with him to figure it out. hee hee.....yah, pass the ball back into his court!!!! yay!!! but then again, it will mean a delay in my work from home initiative.
