I don't know much. From my own experience, the VPN allows you to connect to a company's network if you are outside, for example overseas or working from home. This would allow you to access customers records and update it (I presume, since it's a bank job). The disabling of JavaScript is purely for security. JavaScript can scan for lots of information once loaded. I do that before, for fun. But not in banks, just scanning simple stuffs like scanning a whole range of IP addresses.
That's about what I know. Other stuffs, perhaps you need to ask hackers. They can tell you loads more. The finance area is a fun area to be in, but get into the most trouble also.

Some are with the security, ensuring that nobody except the staff can read and update or change records.
There's also the database guys, to make sure that they can recover everything in time if their database server crashes.
The programming guys, to help develop a program for the staff to use.
The technicians, helping out with general tech stuffs, be it customer service or their own department.
Some big companies are known to split them up (like MS), while others just call it the IT department. -

By right, a USB broadband modem should be able to let you surf the Net (provided everything is connected and configured properly). If you aren't able to surf, you might need a router. -

Most laptops have a built in card.
See the sticker on your laptop. Do you have something like 802.11b/g wireless LAN?
If don't have, then you need to buy a card. Need not to be the same brand for the wireless card. But the card must be using the same frequency as your router. Check your router manual. If it is using B/G as the wireless, the frequency is 2.4GHz. The wireless card will state what it support.

i tink i inherited one l-cheapo lappy. boh wireless ley. all the stickers behind are asset tags and helpdesk number of the bank.
