SATA II HDD

Hi.... to all those who read my earlier post will know - ATI or Nvidia - will know that i'm planning for a new PC end of the year (bonus coming). Planning to get a secondary 320GB HDD for storage of MP3, divx movies, girliy PICs and stuffs..... would like to tansfer my stuff from my old 80GB HDD over to the new one before year ends.
QUESTION -
My present M/B only have SATA I port (150mb/s)... will putting in a SATA II HDD works.
My plan is to put in the new 320GB SATA HDD into my present PC to use as storage. Then when the time comes for the change, just install win XP into the smaller 80GB SATA II HDD and connet up the 320GB HDD. Then all my stuff will be ready to use without SOO much backup from the old PC into DvD disc.
Really need to know if SATA II HDD will work on SATA I port......

Big problem lah...... some of my friends think its ok, since the M/B could detech the speed or something like that...... Now someone say 'don't think so'....
Anymore people think ok or not ??? -
personally i don't think so. in theory sataI and II were made to be backward comaptible with one another (read here) but to avoid the problem of troubleshooting and hunting for solutions or drivers/ system updates etc it is best to know what hardware you have and what hard disk you will be using (model and make) before you are up against any issues during the installation or migration process. after all, anything is possible. -

But I'm not going to risk spoiling a motherboard if it is going to be plugged in.
At the least, you spend more money buying a motherboard.
At the most, you will be hurt if it something goes wrong. -

i'm using a sata1 m/b but a sata2 capable hdd.
its just like using a peripheral that is usb2.0 capable but on a usb1.0, the speed will be downgraded. -

no lah the answers have always been there. oh before you use that SATA2 hdd on the MSI 865PE board make sure you check your hard disk for any SATA I or II jumper settings. we don't know what brand of hdd u buying and if the hdd has a jumper setting for you to choose between SATA I or II please set as appropriate to the mobo native SATA speed (in your case 1.5Gbs).Originally posted by hloc:Thxs..... just what i need to know.... thxs again

No jumper... just select at Bios.... but thxs for the info

Okay if your new 320GB SATA II hard disk has no jumpers fine. The makers probably had an auto configure or auto detect system in the hard disk itself to back down the speed to 1.5Gbs to work with your motherboard. However some hard disk makers have jumpers built on their SATA II drives. download the user manual version 4.0 (English) to see the illustrations of the jumpers layout.
as a precaution it is advisable to set the jumpers on the compatible settings in case there may be any interface protocol issues.
As for your mobo its an 865PE chipset..ancient to some. But at the time of print on the user manual, SATA II hard disk were not introduced to the market yet. There should not be any options in the bios to tweak the interface speed. Unless a BIOS update has been released otherwise it is better to post a screen shot of your BIOS screen so that others who may be in a similar situation as yourself be kept informed and aware of the situation. -
Sorry... i mean my M/B have no jumper... not HDD. Sorry again. Going to go Sim LIm before work today to get the 320GB Maxtor HDD.
I did bulid a system for my friend using SATA I HDD.... same M/B some more. Just select from Bios that you want to use SATA and the M/b will do the rest.

That's amazing. i set up a 865G intel mobo with a sata I hdd it just auto configures everything. but there are no options to select sata I (1.5Gbs) or sata II (3.0Gbs) speeds. and since in the above quote you indicated SATA I then it will sure work since we were talking about using a SATA II hard disk on a SATA I supported only mobo.Originally posted by hloc:Sorry... i mean my M/B have no jumper... not HDD. Anyway this post should have helped clarify whatever doubt you may be having over the SATA interface and also cautioned you to some likely interface protocol issues with SATA I and SATA II hardware. -
Hi..... SATA II HDD have been install into my PC. Transfering data for old HDD to SATA HDD as i am writing this....
Beginning got so problem with the Bios..... OS unable to boot up. After some tinking on the Bios..... no problem.
Just found out that this Maxtor SATA II HDD have a jumper behind that enable the SATA II HDD to be 'downgrade' into a 150mb/s SATA I HDD !!
Therefore all fear now over.
To any who wish to use SATA II HDD on SATA I only M/B, i t can be done..... just select the HDD to SATA I.......
