software and hardware advice needed on faxing

hi all,
Pls kindly advise me what software and hardware that i can make use, this is my situation
My working environment is just a few PCs, running with XP Home and Pro versions, joining to a switch, then to the ADSL
As our conventional fax machine is going haywire lately, we thought of replacing with a new one, but found that those high end Canon or Fuji Zerox multi-purpose (print, scan, scan, fax) machine too expensive for us.
We have a b/w laser printer and also a scanner, and now we just lack a injet colour printer(as we dont use colour so often) and a fax machine. so the Canon and Fuji machine seem to be a overkill for us too.
in this case, i am just wondering is there any software that can allow us to receive and send "fax" using our PC?
i remember seeing some companies having programs tht enable them to "receive" fax in their PC, so then they will decide which "fax" to print out and which one are the "spam fax".
in my case, do i need a software only, or i need both a software and a hardware?

In the 90s, I was using winfax pro by symantec to send and recieve faxes via the 56k modem on my pentium 2 pc.

XP really makes a lot of things easy if you want it. And saves cost.

Hardware wise, you just need a PC, modem and scanner.
Software wise, your PC must be running XP, modem and scanner drivers installed. You also need your XP CD with you, since Windows don't install fax services by default.
As for the spamming feature, I'm unsure. -
Nowadays documents no longer get faxed, they get pdfed. There was this company which didn't know how to get back to me, scan a copy of the fax they wanted to send me, then pdfed the fax, and emailed me instead.
