PANEL MAKERS in the Far East are wandering around marking out territory on their latest battleground.
Not content with the measly number of letters in the acronym OLED, the Koreans and the Taiwanese are bringing out the artillery over AMOLED.
Taiwanese firm Chi Mei EL Corporation (CMEL) reckoned its 25-inch AMOLED TV panel was the dog's proverbials as it showed it off proudly at the FPD International trade show in Japan. While on further shores of the Yellow Sea, at the Korea Electronics Show, Samsung bragged that its 17-inch AMOLED screen was only 12mm thick.
Not only are Active matrix (AM) OLED panels crack-model thin, they are also supposed to offer an ultra-wide viewing angle, ultra-high contrast, and ultra-fast response times.
CMEL said it used low-temperature poly-silicon thin film transistor (LTPS TFT) process technology from its mates at Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) together with its own organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) to develop its 25-incher.
Samsung said its display commands a less-than-0.01ms response time at 1,600 x 1,200 resolution with 400 nits of brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio.
Samsung SDI presented 17-inch AMOLED TV set at KES 2006. The panel is only 1.8mm thick and the TV set is just thin as 12mm. It features a brightness of 400 candela, a contrast ratio of 1,000:1 and
170 viewing angle.
