  Access speed is also an issue for me...I would be accessing quite a lot of data from this external HDD...so its a speed-cost balancing act...

  however i would opt for a firewire instead, well only if u get an ext hdd mod case with firewire and yr notebook has firewire...but i tink high speed USB should do fine. try to back up the datas u r not using that often and free up yr 80GB notebook. work on the data there and once completed back it up once over your ext hdd which u going to get.
  
  i never leave my ext hdd connected and idling over my PC or notebook. only connect it when transferring data and after that disconnec the unit and keep it in a cool dry and safe location.

  I already have an external HDD for backups...I am buying this new one for games and applications...

  Yeh, the promo may not be appealing to those who own a PC/Laptop but it's quite decent a deal for those who din hv one.
