Most of the time, when you buy a new motherboard, you will buy a new processor, because a motherboard only supports a particular type of processor slot.
You can't put a socket AM2 processor into a motherboard that supports socket 754 and vice versa.
Here is something to read.
When you buy a new processor, ask the salesperson what socket it uses and get a motherboard that supports it. You can always go online and do some research.
Here's a step by step process of how to do it.
Let's say you want to buy an AMD Sempron processor.
Step 1: Go to AMD's website and find AMD Sempron processor. Look at its key architecture.
AMD Sempron. From the website, there are 2 different sockets used for AMD Sempron processor. One is AM2, the other is 754. Now that you have this info, go Google it or go straight to motherboards.org
Step 2: Go to
motherboards.org and search for the motherboards that support it.
Here's the resultsIf you are looking for Intel processors, visit this
website instead. Here's my
results after searching for Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
