Buying a laptop very soon...need advice.

Alright, thanks for reading this. I'm getting a laptop very soon and i need some help/advice from you people on which brand and model to get.
I need this laptop for my school(i'm in an IT course)and i would be using C++ and some 3D modeling software to do my work. It would be a plus if it could run new videogames farily well, not having all effects to maximum but as long as it doesn't slow down while playing. So now, my budget is around 1.5k(lower preferable). I would also prefer it to be Vista ready.
This is where you people step in. What can i get for my budget and my requirements? I know my budget may be too low for my stated requirements but i am really not in the know regarding laptop prices so try to give me the price for the laptop that you think can pass my requirements. But it should be below 2k.
You don't have to help a fellow techie out, but i would really appreciate it if you do. I really am not in the know.

Stay away from Toshiba. Period.
And also, you might want to lower your expectations. Making desktops ready for Vista is already costly enough as it is. Making laptops ready? That's much more difficult. -
prepare 2.5k. get lower end brands like acer, etc. i recommend 14" types, your graphics card must be independent, no on-board graphics. ram must be plenty plenty, 1gb is minimum standard.
if your course is fully design or/and video editing type, get a mac.
btw, wad course har? dun tell me make games one? -

juz remember.. MUST decent graphics card, and 1GB ram at least. these two criteria very de important.
last time our team all gt laptops, two of us even specially go buy laptops for dat semester but graphics cannot make it.. in the end, very gan kor. nt dat i regret la.. i need it for work outside of school. muz consider more den schoolwork. -

For under 2k, you might as well wait for your school's laptop fair to come. They have huge discounts, though might not be Vista ready.

Get something Core 2 Duo at least 1.83 ba...
Graphics don even need Nvidia or Ati...
Get Intel Media Accelerator.
Ram dual slot of 512 with the total of 1GB enough le la...
Hard disk...
get something 80 gb and get urself a external hard disk.
The most you wnat graphics go get a ATI at least radeon X1400 Mobility
256 memory dedicated...
Or u can go for Acer's the crap "HYPER MEMORY"

my advice is don't rush into it.take your time and choose the best laptop
wait for your school computer fair. they have good deals(but sometimes sh!tty laptops)
