Very strange https:// error

  hi all,
  
  to all tech experts here, i cannot enter secure web sites(https://) ever since i installed a new DVD writer today. maybe the installation did something to reset my web settings or whatever.
  
  when i go to hotmail.com, the page loads up, but when i log-in(secure site), error 404 appears. when i log-in to paypal(with the secure yellow lock in the status bar), the same error 404 appears as well. same as gmail. anything that's related to secure log-in/sites gives me error and page won't load at all.
  
  every other sites like yahoo, google's search site amd all other websites that doesn't require secure log-in or https:// works fine.
  
  i'm using windows xp, and tried it on Firefox and IE; same errors. in IE, i tried setting the security level to low, but in vain. in Firefox, there's not even a way to set the security level.

  solved already. went to regedit and edit some settings. then started Norton Internet Security and tweak somemore.
  
  dunno why, but sometimes, i either feel like i'm a god or i'm bill gates' maker.
