A SINGAPORE teenager faces jail after he admitted illegally connecting to his neighbour's wireless internet network.
Garyl Tan Jia Luo, 17, was sentenced under the Computer Misuse Act and could go down for three years.
According to the Straits Times Tan's lawyer said the teen was "deeply remorseful" for his actions.
While District Judge Bala Reddy said he would not give Tan the minimum sentence, he asked the teen if he would be willing to enlist early for the mandatory national service "as a way to stay out of mischief".
Tan agreed and the case was adjourned for the judge to think about a sentence. -

A Singapore teenager has pleaded guilty to tapping into a neighbour's wireless internet network and will be sentenced next month, a newspaper has reported.
Seventeen-year-old Garyl Tan Jia Luo's offence falls under the Computer Misuse Act and carries a penalty of up to three years in jail and fines of up to $S10,000.
He is the first person in Singapore to be charged with this offence.
In mitigation, Tan's lawyer said the teen was "deeply remorseful" for his actions, the Straits Times reported.
Court papers showed that a neighbour made a formal complaint in May against Tan, for accessing his wireless network without permission, the Straits Times said.
Many notebook computers and personal digital assistants can detect unsecured networks and easily gain internet access.
Tan's lawyer's request for a minimum fine was turned down by District Judge Bala Reddy, who instead asked Tan if he would be willing to enlist early for the mandatory national service "as a way to stay out of mischief," the newspaper reported.
Tan agreed, and the judge ordered a pre-sentencing report next month. -

if download songs then wrong lah, because got copyright issues inolved

I think the judge is ridiculous to try to impose such a harse offence. A high fine is more than enough as punishment for such a small offence.
I think the neighbour is CB lang. Small thing want to pursue until like that. Don't tell me the neighbour is from an elite family. -

I like the part about mandatory NSF , this teen will be ORD like a gentleman rather than face a Jail Term.
So , that means all gentlemen should be paid more allowance for not going home during Saturdays and Sundays in NSF?

I think the punishment is really too harsh. He just does what many ppl have been doing all the while. To throw him in jail will ruin his future.

Yah... I think a fine is more suitable for this small offence... Jail is a bit too extreme.
