Windows not genuine?

My computer broke down recently and I sent it for repair. When I got back my computer, it was reformatted and after a few days of usage, a message appear that my window was not genuine and needs to vaildate in order to receive future updates from Microsoft. Why? My computer don't seem to have this problem before I sent it for the repair.

There's a difference between validate and activate.
Activation is required each time the PC is reformatted and Windows is reinstalled or when you install the OS on a brand new PC.
Validation is needed when access any Microsoft's sites.
If it's the validation that you did not pass, I can't handle this. You have to email Microsoft Singapore (note: not the one in US, the Microsoft branch in Singapore) and notify them about fake copies of Windows so they could do something to the shop.
If it's activation, please go to Start > All Programs > Activate Windows. If you did not pass this as well, again, notify Microsoft Singapore.
Show them screenshots AND your receipt as proof, or you might into trouble with Microsoft. -

Looks like you have to email Microsoft and tell them about it. Acer uses a few gig for the recovery partition, if it's gone, I doubt the recovery discs would work. -

I rmb..last time aft i format my com..used another XP CD.Tried to key in my original cd key.Cant work.Learnt that i need to call microsoft to get the CD and call my HP to get the recovery CD.
Then i give a damn about it and jus use the pirated one -

Did you give the repairman your original recovery discs that comes with your computer? If so did you ensure that he uses the discs to format your computer? For noobs to PC, its always better to buy OEM computers from trusted dealers that provides the original recovery dics.
If you have your recovery dics you can do a format on your own, validate and activate windows within the 30 days period so that you can continue using windows on your PC. -

This is common with lots of PC technicians, they want to save money, but never realize that MS has now made it harder to do so.
Threadstarter may have a genuine copy of Windows, but since the OEM copy has been registered with MS, MS reports the copy of Windows as non-genuine. -

From OS to software to security programmes, updates are inevitable. Crackers, criminals and even businessmen throw out thousands of worms and malware and junk to the internet everyday. Hardware capabilities improves and software made them think made them work, better than before. Manufacturers are trying to comply with standards so that everything when put together works. When they don't, updates and improvements has to be written and given to the consumer so that the products and services paid by them still function.
When the updates piled up a new package shall be released. When they become obsolete a new version rolls in. That's why we have different windows versions of Windows, different versions of norton, different versions of IE.
Are you using XP with service pack 2? If you are able to update your computer up to that stage without going online it won't take up much of your time and money if you have unlimited broadband access. When you are connected to automatic updates you can opt for 'custom' settings and chose the 'critical' security updates to download and install first. Some of them may require a reboot so just have patience. -
They can duplicate but cannot use the duplicate recovery discs to install the OS onto another computer. The manufacturer (e.g acer) has that copy of OS/ recovery disc locked with the computer model and serial number it was assigned to. However if you use another copy of genuine Win OS on the acer computer, it shall be accepted and you can proceed to install.
