computer cannot be turned on

i have a old HP computer which recently went dead. it cannot be turned on. is the power supply spoilt or is it the motherboard? bought the com in 2001

5. your cable is spoilt, but none of the above are spoilt.
Note: For 1 to 4, either one can spoil or more than one are spoilt. -

Five year old computer, major unknown hardware failure.... I think you're better off buying a new computer than trying to fix it.

If you have not changed any hardwhere or opened the computer most probably it could be some problems with your PSU or computer motherboard. If you have a multimeter you can use it to check on the PSU to see of any current is passing thorugh the unit. If that passes you can try changing the lithium battery on the motherboard first or remove that battery and check for the power left in it before you buy a new battery to replace. You must be a real down luck because a computer bought (if made also) in 2001 under normal care and usage should not go so soon.
This problem wouldn't have been too difficult for others who have spare hardware to replace and test out the system for where the problem lies. -
For harddisk dmg, u should still see the bootup screen den hang there.
For motherboard dmg, u should still see ur cpu power on light up but the screen remains black.
If cant even switch on, den i believe u should start with the power supply unit. -

totally dead liao. no power. the comp has been giving me lots of problems. in 2002, replace the motherboard, hard disk also got problem....

step by step troubleshoot
1)open your cpu
2)disconnect your psu from all devices
3)Smell the cpu(not funny, this is to check got burn or not, if got surely got burned smell)Don't have? move to the next step
4)Power up your psu; just plug the cable into direct power source, should be able to on. Cannot on? put aside.
5)take other psu and connect all the wires on to your motherboard and try to power it up. Cannot on?, your psu is safebut your motherboard isn't, if can on your psu dead liao;need to change
6)If you have any other extra mobo, try to turn it on using your(working psu). If cannot, mobo dead, need to buy new mobo.
Hard disk or other problems
1)Turn on your pc, if it hangs or crash, most likely a virus or some conflict.
2)If got several beeps means one of your hardware is dead
3)disconnect all hardware(do not disconnect your psu from your mobo) and plug it in one at a time(plug in one device and see if can turn of without beeps), Don't have beeps, proceed to other devices. If after a particular device you plug in got beeps, take it out, and continue with other devices. The ones which you plug in got beeps means that its faulty.
