ok first look at the left, there is a bar right?
search for a "T" symbol.

From the sounds of it, I think our tech-savvy friend wants to simply convert a .doc to a .pdf.
The simplest program you can use is Click To Convert. Go to http://www.clicktoconvert.com/index.html, download and install the program. It's been a while since I installed it on my computer, but in the installation you may need to specify the option to put the Click To Convert button on your Microsoft Office toolbar.
Once you've installed the Click To Convert, open your Word document and click the Click To Convert button, and it will automatically produce a PDF version of your document for you. -
