What causes a comp to restart on its own?

  nope. i just switch on skype, msn, yahoo and listening to skypecast then suddenly the screen black.
  
  another time is i do adware scan, virus sca and defrag then it restarted.
  
  3rd time is i accidentally kick the CPU

  Probably it is cause by some faulty hardware.

  Here are the step you can take to prevent your comp from automatically restarting itself:
  
  1: Right Click on "my computer" icon which is located at the desktop or start menu.
  
  2: Click on "Properties"
  
  3:Click on "Advanced" tab
  
  4:Under the "Startup and Recovery" section, click on "settings"
  
  5: Under the "System failure" section, Uncheck the "Automatically restart"
  
  6: Restart your computer if require.
  
  Note: The above mention method apply to windows XP.
