if u buy DIY CPU, make sure that you monitor can plugin to the DIY cpu. cos if u are using a very old moniter.. which still using the old plugin port, consult your dealer and ask him whether can fit.
one of the biggest mistake for DIY user is that they Buy computers which they dont 100% use all of its function. for example I bought my new DIY cpu with just $900 dollar.. and i fully use all of its function(cd burner etc).however, my friend bought a $1500 cpu with has extra fuctions in it.(super gay graphic card, blue tooth, infrared, SD card reader). he didn't use/ fully use those function at all.... after 1 year,my DIY computer value dropped to $500, and his dropped to say.. $800. and its time when super gay graphic card, blue tooth, infrared, SD card reader are our need. these can be bought like $300(1 year ago 600 dollar).
so total, he spend $1500 and i spend $900+$300=$1200. his super gay graphic card, blue tooth, infrared, SD card reader all rusty liao.. and mine still brand new.
since u wish to buy ready made computers which plays dvd games, 1gig RAM is safe for u.. infact, 512 ram can play also..and also, the processor.. Duo core and Duo core 2 only have a slight speed difference.. but then their price difference is like say... $200 why not just let the computer which uses duo core to load 1.5 seconds more than the duo core 2 computer?
to summarise all, dont fall into trap which is what u want. but instead, stick it with what u need.
ready made computers with 17 inch LCD screen can be bought below $1000. their performance difference between a much higher end computers (eg $1400) is small..
