Yes, usually you type in your main ip address into your internet browser and you can access your router config. Then look for a nat forwarding thingie, where you can specify which ports for udp, tdp kind of thing. Match the numbers with the one on your bt client.
But opening ports not necessarily will speed up your d/l. You can have 5000 seeders and 6000 leechers and your speed will still be like fcuk one.

Take last night for example, I was d/ling Confession of Pain, there were only 20 seeders and I could tap only 8 on my open ports. But I was so lucky one of the seeds was throwing me 100kb/s constant, and the 700mb movie was done in like 3 hours, otherwise 2 full weeks.

I would recommend you increase your upload, occasionally you get a slight boost. But of course it might be an obstacle to your downstream. And when you surf the net while your bittorrent is running, I recommend you don't load pages which are pic intensive, all the bandwidth will go directly to loading your webpages as priority.
