Safe or not, Recommendations needed!

hmm today...l go download the antivirus and the spyware thingy recommended in the sticky thread...l download the spybot search & destroy, the AVG free anti virus and the ccleaner, didnt download any firewall, cuz l already hav a norton personal firewall....BUT IT IS 2004 VERSION...
Anyway the above things l download...is very safe for computer to use rite? Juz to ensure only..cuz hse only gt 1 com...spoilt liao...jialat sia...anyway do u tink l shld change my norton personal firewall to a new one? Any good recommendations mah?
Oh ya and anyway is tere any free video converter that can convert all sorts of video formats to MP4...cuz l hav a psp mah...then was thinking of putting sum shows inside..
use the psp downloads 9 before...dun find it useful cuz it juz supports Avi and mpeg format...thanks for everyone help!!

oh ya mayi..hav to tell u sumtinz ah...juz now l went to see the stickythread...launtpc recommendations...saw the spyware thingy he intro is spywarewarrior...it is classified as safe...but then l read in ur other thread...u say spywarewarrior is a fake one....can clear the doubts on this...haha no offence...juz like to notify u...

For your antivirus and anti spyware, its safe.
Just for you to know (All freeware):
Anti-spyware, currently well-known: Ad-aware, Spybot - Search & Destroy and Window Defender.
Firewall, currently best free: ZoneAlarm free version.
Anti-virus, Currently well-known: AVG free version and AntiVir Personal Edition Classic.

I would suggest use a up-to-date firewall. I don't think symantec is giving any more support to 2004 version. Use ZoneAlarm instead.
Would suggest you getting 2 anti-spyware program instead because some anti-spyware program can't detect certain spywares found in your computer. So getting 2 would compensate this problems. Suggest using Spybot and Window Defender*.
Note: I assume you are using legal version of windows, if not, you can't use window defender.

As for your first question, you can keep the Norton Firewall. But if you don't like it, you can just uninstall it and install a new firewall. -

If you ask me, currently the best free firewall is zonealarm, couldn't find anything better.
Might as well use it, since your 2004 norton firewall is kinda outdated. Its 3 yrs back, I don't think they are supporting it anymore, in terms of releasing updates for it. -
ZoneAlarm is best for newbies to PCs. There are better firewalls out there, and personally I prefer Sygate. Although Sygate is old, it has stood well against security breaches when configured correctly. It's light on resources also.
Jetico is for the advanced users.
Kerio is in between, either you set t on learning mode or a basic mode, where everything deemed safe will pass, not safe prompt or block. -

Last time I tried ZoneAlarm and it made my internet surfing slower. Then I uninstalled it.
Do you notice any speed impact when you turn on your firewall software?

For those who use router, yes, it's a hardware firewall. It's protects your home network. However, it doesn't notify you of any funny things that are going on, specifically outgoing connections.
Spywares and viruses love to make outgoing connections, which can be and is blocked by firewalls if they use known ports. If known ports are not used and you set the firewall to notify you for every small little thing, you can see where the connections are going and block them. That's why it's still necessary to use a software firewall.
