i had thoughts of doing a small emp device once upon a time, after i found some circuit drawings and instructions. juz stick it on the harddrive, anything.. zap!

That's the role of computer forensics, recovering what is deemed impossible.
The only way I know to destroy evidence nearly completely is to destroy disturb the magnetic field near the hard disk.
Other ways of erasing data has not been really successful, as lots of tools can recover data. -
By the way, the meaning of hacking is wrong, provided by the Helium link. I don't think EC Council authored this as well. They should know hacking better than commoners do and should know hacking isn't just about what you think.

i read from somewhere b4 tat a particular file size has to be over written 5 times in order to be completely deleted otherwise they're re-traceable. then norton also got 1 program that can deleted confidential files permanently..

The recommended times for overwriting data is 23 times now. -
use magnet, heat or static charges to kill hdd !!!!!

Instead of putting science fiction where it shouldn't be, there are tools and methods available for secure deletion of sensitive information from your computer.
Not everybody is trained in all this IT security stuff, so bring the information to them if they cannot do it.

There's nothing fictional about using magnets. If you don't believe, put magnet directly over any metal parts of the hard disk and tell me what's the results.
There has been disastrous results over it, and one of the forumers here actually have a first hand experience of what magnets do to hard disk. -

Use a secure file delete software that has the "Peter Gutmann" method.
The US DOD method is overwriting the data 7 times by default and it is unrecoverable using software recovery tool but data may be recover using hardware method.
For the "Peter Gutmann" method, the data is overwritten 35 times by default and it is impossible to recover using software and hardware base recovery tool.
