$1000 Budget to rebuild my CPU

I'm running on...
MSI PM8M-V 478socket mobo
Pentium 4HT 3GHZ processor
Powercolour Radeon X700 Pro graphic card
Ben Q DVD+-RW
Maxtor 80GB HDD
2 x 256mb ram
Packard Bell casing and PSU
Maybe running vista, mainly for gaming.(half life 2, need for speed, etc)
Which parts should I replace and which are the ones should I keep? Experts please help!

the only problem i find is the ram which is 512, vista needs at least 1024 to perform better. so you should get around 2gb of it
, btw remember to check if your mother board supports up to 2gb of ram or 1?
getting a secondary hard drive would also be better

You're asking for trouble for opting for Vista but bo bian if u wanna play those game. Yeap, More RAM is needed.

You are very bottlenecked now by the cpu and mainboard.They are old platforms which does not have room for upgrading.upgrading the graphics card is not feasible as you are still using an agp slot and most new graphics use PCI-E interface and the "newer" agp cards are expensive like hell.If die die must upgrade, then i suggest you add RAM.
Otherwise, i recommend you save more money and get a totally new com or you can use the $1000 to get a rather decent computer now

Vista recommended specs for RAM is 512MB. So that means that it will be very slow if you have 512MB of RAM. You will need more RAM.
By the time Vista is released, most graphics will be using DirectX 10. It would be wise to get a graphics card that support DirectX 10.
Don't switch to Vista now, as it is too expensive. And not worth it, because most drivers aren't compatible in Vista, and Microsoft is seeking to lock down drivers in Vista as well, which will severely limit your options for upgrades. -
As most suggested there is nothing you need to do or you can do with your specs if you want to run vista. Xp is still holding out for most users and Vista will take a while to join the highway. You can still use your system to play the games and do the general computing stuff. You can save your S$1000/- for the major overhaul which may mean changing the motherboard, processor graphcis card and all. If you really want to spend some red packet money the logical upgrade is to get a S$400++ 150gig SATA II Raptor. It can improve performance a little and be carried over to your future upgrades considering you are using an enterprise level hard disk - the only ones Western diggital have and affordable to most PC builders as compared to the expensive SAS or SCSI from Hitachi and Seagate. -

Seems like no one is hitting the jackpot. Did anyone question his platofrm and CPU is 64 bit ready?
S$1000 is simply not enough for vista while you will see improvements in OS loading with a Raptor. When it comes to Vista i don't think it will be an overkill.
Maybe Jay should save up the money, he will need more than that on hardware when Vista hits mainstream. -
IT show coming, during this time do not buy from the fair until last day, last evening, else you can wait 2 weeks after the fair, then go SLS to buy, sure will got prices even lower than during the fair due to over supply.

VISTA CANNOT be used for gaming...lots of games are incompatible with it. You should check out the reasons for not using vista thread.

I think MS will be the biggest fool if their OS cannot be used for gaming. The combinations of notebook models is lesser than that for DIY PC hardware builds. Its a question that can be readily answered.
The biggest problem is always money and whether it is enough.
Wait until you go university and got a budget of 10k to buy notebook i answer for Jay. Meanwhile keep the 478pin processor computer, it can still serve your gaming needs for years ahead.

well said farmer, again jay, do you really need the mobility offered by the laptop.Just because everyone in poly is getting a laptop does not mean you must get one .In this case, a diy desktop would serve your needs very well.Since you can bring out 3k for a laptop, why not just invest a little more about 1.5k, to get yourself a decent desktop.The price for C2D looks quite good for the time being.As for vista, i suggest you hold your horses before getting one since it is plagued by driver problems and compatibility issues now.
As for your old com ,it is still rather good for normal web surfing, word processing and old games(pre 2005).Don't expect the latest game to run smoothly on it.
