Building up a personal computer

I'm planning build up a personal computer on my own. Have got a budget of about $1500. I have done a search at goggle but can't seem to find a guides on how to build my own computer. Any guides? And which should I get and stuff?

I only know of HWZ got a guide, but seriously, I wondered if the ports etc will change if we have a different piece of hardware???

Any idea how much can I pay a computer-repairing shop if I have gotten the materials myself and call them to assemble it for me?

i think there are couple of custom computer builder shops in sim lim square/tower??, you just order the parts and assoceries and pc towers u want and they'll literally put them together for you at no charge lar. it'll save more time and trouble rather then buying the parts and assoceries seperately and then bringing them to a computer shop to have it put together.Originally posted by coldzero:Any idea how much can I pay a computer-repairing shop if I have gotten the materials myself and call them to assemble it for me?
1500 shud build u a decent computer with a decent processor provided u dun ask for extra gadgets on your comp like.. cooler master, terratec sound cards.. etc..etc.. -

eh, i advise u firstly look PC for packages (under "PC System Pricelists Download")
then if u cannot find the right combination u want, next i suggest u.. u buy parts in bundle.(@ "Bundle Package Pricelists Download")
thirdly, not advisable, go buy each individual parts and build it..(@ "PC Components Pricelists Download")
if u buy the parts in sim lim, u can request to fix it for u free. thats if u buy from the shop which also provides this service. -
SimLim? Don't really trust the place there. My friend brought his CPU to install a RAM bought from one of the shops. When he brought it home, he realised the shop changed his 2.4GHz processor to 1.2GHz. Very untrustworthy. Anyway, what's about the price to build a comp with a decent graphic for occastionally gaming, decent soundcard, 2.4GHz processor and 1GB RAM?

( the money u pay 20% goes to courts, 50% goes to PC company, 30% to fctory which produces the parts for PC company to assemble)
(2nd most exp) - when u buy from PC manufacturer( eg: from dell retailer shops), they usually sell a little cheaper than those sold in courts
( the money u pay goes to 65% to PC manufacturer (which includes the rental of shop to sell their product.. etc), 35% to fctory which produces the parts for PC company to assemble)
(3rd most exp) - buy from website( eg: people build com liao den sell in website, or buy from dell website)

( cheaper)as for sim lim, people who usually do this trade buy parts in bulk( and thus this lowers the price) and with their knowledge, they match them for user perferance(eg for office work, gaming, simple surfing etc).
because sim lim shops dont need to go through troubles eg: delivery,on site repair.. this lower the cost for a pc. best if its a family business... all the workers are brother sis, dad, mom to each other.. the boss of the shop no need to pay alot to their workers( which are daughters.. son etc).. den the price of the products will be damn cheap. one shop for example. best bargain
there are alot more factors which cause sim lim prices to be lower than usual..
( the money u pay goes to 35% goes to Sim lim shops and 65% goes to importers)
if u want the cheapest PC, buy the parts from the manufacturerand fix it yourself... but its very rare to see manufacturer to sell products in their factory. they might not want to take extra trouble to sell u the products and people like us are not likely to take extra trouble to buy from them. as u know.. time is money. they would likely sell their parts in bulks for people in sim lim, dell etc... -
But can the shops in SimLim really be trusted?

you can get the those computers from simlim.
dont worry about getting scammed they do business there and they know that if they cheat for once.. and becase for a small $20, their reputation goes down and no one buys from them.
u will need to be more alert
check that the parts are correctly installed... u can request them to view the parts in the PC before u do the payment.
most importantly.. make sure that there's no flaw in the reciept.. cost date..warrenty date signature...company...parts u bought...etc.. do acheck with the ads also. -
your friend probably thinks they cheat him/her because they could have made a mistake on replacing the parts.
and them everyone thought that its fine and alright but who knows that your friend discovers it when he got back home..
when he get back to the store.. he also have no prove that they switch the processor (cos to protect the sim lim people ,they may also think that your friend is going to scam them by tell them they switch their processor).
best is to ask the sim lim people to check and confirm with u everything before leaving the tower. -

I bought my stuff from different shops, i.e. like Casing i bought from a shop in Funan. Then mobo and processor I bought from Fuwell, bought the rest from Ban Leong.
You can go to HWZ price guide and check. But I like the service at Fuwell at SLS. The guys there quite nice. (and no, I'm not a shareholder. Just telling it as it is) -

S$1500 can get u a good pc. If u r using back the same old HDD, Floppy Disk, RAM, Keyboard, Monitor even more cheaper. All shops in SLS same. And pls get original s/w coz getting pirated ones will cause much problems later.
Do take note: Get the MainBoard, Processor and RAM (min 1GB)in the same shop.
Next u can go around and get out the price for the HDD. A 80GB one is sufficient. Dun get W****** D******.
Get Hitachi.
Casing u can get at any shops. Try get a black color one coz if dirty, it can't be seen clearly. Black ish sexy too. -

The guys are Fuwell and Lazer Distribution are nice.
Lazer Distribution for cheaper goods - because they are distributors.
If you want mouse and keyboard and want them cheap, find this shop around 3rd level - an A1Pro wholesaler.
Great and cheap goods.
My mouse with me for 2 years, keyboard 7 years. -

There is no fun in DIY if you don't assemble the PC yourself. If you gonna get some guys to assemble it for you might as well get an OEM like Dell or Acer. Don't be surprised you will go into some trouble if someone else install everything for you with all the separate hardware you chose. Get an OEM you are still backed by warranty and aftersale service.
For complete noob you have to get to know all the processors and the mainboards with the various chipsets. Learn the form factor and how each processor type fits into the board. Getting the incorrect pin count means a misfit. For graphics card its the same but you should not go wrong, after all there's only 2~3 sizes to choose from - AGP, PCI-e or PCI2.3. Hard disk SATAII and RAM DDR(2) should be the trend now while most card should support larger screens and wide resolution too. PC case sizes are still generic at ATX while the ROM and Floppy still stays. You do have to take note of the output power pin count for the PSU to choose from as the correct type with enough power will then be able to flare up your system and run it steady. As for sound you can add a card but for the average user, the onboard sound chip at the mainboard should be all that is needed.
OS is the other important thing and for a first build it usually takes up a portion of the budget.
