  how many svchost.exe should there be normally?

  svchost is very important in Windows, but for some, it's not. For example, in networking, if this PC is not connected to the Net.

  its because i found a few files that StartupList doesn't have record of and AVG doesn't know about either..so wondering if something lurking in my PC but i can't pick it up

  Usually it's very easy to tell for certain svchost.
  
  If you are updating Windows, stop the update. One of svchost.exe resources will drop.
  
  If you are connected to the Net, disconnect. One of the svchost might disappear.
  
  And if unsure, go dig out all copies of svchost and upload it for scanning.
