Securing of wireless!?

Mm, I got some silly IT questions to ask..
Well I am using this SMC Wireless Cable/dSL Broadband router for 3 years..internet service is from starhub.
When i installed the SMC software, my bro did not set any sort of password etc on the router and it was installed on my late fujistu laptop which was spolit already. But the router still usable..
Now the questions are
1) I want to set password etc for my wireless connection aka router yeah..but i don't know how le...my laptop that had the smc installed in it is spolit thou i still have those smc CD etc
2) Its a question i am thinking, since my router did not have password which means people can easily hack/piggyback my network...then if I am using cable for my internet connection, will anyone still able to hack into my laptop?
note, the wireless connection in my laptop is OFF, i am using cable..
Hhmm..i just want to secure my SMC wireless network..how to? calling smc or starhub?

all you have to do to have a BASIC encryption is to set the WEP password + hide your SCIS name. -
I read the manuals many times over..did not have a para abt securing network...hai

To enable encryption, you need to log into the router's configuration page, usually by typing in 192.168.1.1
Then click on Login -> Advanced Setup -> Wireless -> Encryption -
The thing is..the laptop that i installed the SMC software in it is spolit...
that's why i dunno how to go about it..thou i still got the CDs etc..

I doubt it will affect your router, if in doubt, just reset it, then configure it.
2nd question, in theory, they can't, since you are connected physically to a router.
In reality, anything is possible, so the answer is yes. -
you dont need to install router twice. Just go to 192.168.1.1 and type in password which is default if i am not wrong. But make sure you are not accessing other pple's router.

uninstall it. use windows wireless zero configuration instead. usually you wont have to use the advance options of the program which blundled with your router.Originally posted by winning 11:u mean go to?

You using cable that is connected to the wireless rouater right?
Check wats ur defult gateway ip and type that at your internet explorer address
You will be prompt to enter User Name and Password

i oso using SMC router.

Ok, i jus installed router ( thanks to u guys
but i got a freaking 2nd prob! ;( ) and setup my password for my wireless etc in the noon ( i accidently off the power without waiting for the windows to shutdown properly ) then i went out..came back later n after switching on my laptop at 3.55pm, it would go into the main which u can see all the icons and you will see a error msg which like 0.5secs and restarted again..i tried many times and still e same..
I tried taking e note of the error msg and well..somehow like this ->
"A problem has been detected error screen to your screen. blah blah If this is your first time you encountered this, restart ur com. If cannot, follow these steps..blah ...
Check to be sure you have a hardware vendor
To use safe mode, press f8 and select safe mode..

Some of the blah n etc did not manage to catch...
Anywa i tried the safe mode n troubleshoot myself, all e steps related to error in startup i did no use in fixing..
Then I went into admin tools - event viewer, all the below paras were found at 4pm.
In the sys part it came out this ->

Then in the application side -->

You said about turning off the router before Windows fully shut down, and seems like this is causing the error.
Did you install any router software? If yes, try removing it in Safe Mode.
Also, do you have your network card installation CD with you?
If Windows give an error that you can't uninstall, and you can't boot into Normal Mode, do this:
Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig
Select the General tab. Under Startup Selection, select Diagnostic Startup.
Now select the Services tab. Tick this box: Windows Installer. Click OK to apply the settings. Windows will prompt you to restart. Select Yes to reboot.
Then uninstall the router's software after Windows restart.
Do not proceed with this step if you don't have your network card installation CD. Only proceed on if you have the CD
Right click My Computer and select Properties. Select the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button.
Device Manager will open. Scroll down to Network adapter. Click on the + sign to expand. Right click on the adapter shown and select Uninstall.
Reboot your PC back to Normal Mode. See what happens. -

Does your laptop use a battery? Network card is card, not router. Since you are using a laptop, I doubt you have will have the network card installation CD. So don't do this part. -
Before uninstalling your network card, download these drivers first:
Intel PRO/Wireless Drivers
If the Intel drivers don't work, try using HP drivers:
HP Wireless Assistant -

mm..my lappy is wireless built in..so i guess the network card is inside tooo?
clear things up, Ok i got this SMC router installation CD..yeah today i jus installed that only and went to set my passwords..that's all -
well, i bought this SMC2804WBR, 3 years back. At that time, im using my fujitsu lappy which is spolit now.
