Cannot set brightness

hello there, my friend has a compaq presario 1500. he cant seem to set the brightness of his laptop display. he tried pressing shirt+F7[for lower brightness] and F8[for increasing brightness] but none worked. on the keyboard of the laptop, it is printed that these buttons can be used to adjust the brightness. but his laptop does not seems to work. anybody can help him?

Press the Function button (Fn), not Shift.
