Can't start Wins or reinstall

Problem: Can't start Windows, or start up half-way and the pc hung
Tried to do Repair with bootable disc, but the pc hung during installation of Wins. Tried to start pc with a bootable disc to do Reinstall, but the pc hung before it could read the bootable disc.
Any idea what could be wrong? Recent softwares that were installed 2 wks' ago are Wins Movie Maker, CPUz and Super C (or something like that).
Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like a hardware problem.
Before that, is your bootable disc scratched or dirty? If it's dirty, clean it.
Then take out your hard disk, change the jumper settings such to slave mode and plugged it in to another PC.
See if you are able to access the hard disk. -

Mayi, I've confirmed that my HDD is working *phew!*, but the computer has gone into a state of comatose. My IT friend was kind enough to check for me, and he says it could be anything - power supply, RAM, motherboard, or CPU, so we'll never know now.
Since the pc is 5 yrs old, I've decided to just buy a new pc instead of trying to troubleshoot, as new parts may not be compatible, anyway. Once again, many thanks for your help and for sharing our pc concerns.
