what's the difference between thumb drive & pen drive?

how come got so many names de? USB smart drive, Flash drive and U3 smart drive..
I need to get one to do school projects
So which one is recommended? -

they're all the same.. USB, Flash memory based storage media.. they are the size of thumbs, show up on the computer as a "removable drive" so it was marketed as a "thumb drive"
i've bought a few in my time... assorted brands and they're all still working well.. so just go buy one...
the only consideration is the size.. how much storage space you want?
i've got a very old 256MB one which has been commandeered by my dad, office has a 256MB and a couple of 512MB ones.. and my own which is a 4GB one -
then why called pen drive in other places? i quite confused somehow by the names.

but actually all the same -
shaped like a pen.. so call it a pen drive

just think of the different names as 'marketing ploy'
