Problem With Internet Connection

Currently I have an Acer desktop with Windows Xp...
I'm having the problem of not having an ip address, there's no default gateway... It always gives me the "Limited or no connection...blah blah" sh*t... When i type in "ipconfig/ renew" in cmd, it gives me "An error occurred: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket". I'm connected to a router with a Motorola Surfboard cable modem and everything is fine on my other PC. I cannot access the internet as a result...

Select the Support tab.
What's the IP address? Does it start with 169 ? -

Your winsock is corrupted... need to repair. Use the above program to do so. When prompted to reboot, do so.
Otherwise, might need to repair the whole TCP/IP settings. -

That one repairs TCP/IP services, not Windows... don't know liao. -

Ah fug this sh*t can't stand it anymore especially when it affects me when i'm in the middle of a BF2 match!!! The phucking thing keeps losing it's connection after maybe a 1hr? Gotta off & on the thing again...

Looks like your system is in pretty bad shape. I assume you have your XP disk. If you don't, just borrow from a friend...
Try this:
Start > Run and type in regedit
Locate these key and delete the bolded ones:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
Restart the PC. This step is a must, otherwise Windows can't repair itself.
After the PC boots up, go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections
Right click on your connection and select Properties.
Click on the Install button.
Click Protocol, then click on Add.
Click Have disk.
Copy and paste in C:\Windows\inf
You will see a list of protocols. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click OK. -

Uninstall Google Desktop. It has screwed up the TCP/IP numbering. -
