Are you using a USB mouse or keyboard or any USB devices? It happens to some USB mouse, though I have no idea why. As for other devices, no idea. Never seen this happen before.

If it's internal, there will be more hints of what is going on. If it's external... it could well be the external hard disk that has problems, especially USB devices. The system sometimes can detect then can't detect.
