Win Xp dont show my Portable HDD

just bought a new 2.5" portable HDD. its running on a 80gig hitachi HDD. when i plug into the usb the HDD doesnt shows up on my computer. =(
wondering where can it be. no idea how to solve this problem liao, been trying to DIY on device manager but cant -
btw, nothing shows up on the bottom left corner of the task bar, where usually u plug in a usb device there will be a pop up n sound telling u a new USB device have been found.
my usb ports are working fine as tested with several other devices -
is it spinning?
if not...most likely not enough power from the usb connection -

if very quiet means no activity
LED on doesnt mean anything -

oh yeah its alot better this time round. i got the y-type of cable n i plug both in. but i still cant get the drive to spin. but i seem to hear clicking sound

BTW, is it usual for a HDD's shrink wrap to be opened. cos when he got me the HDD it was opened n simply stick back with scotch tape. when i ask why is it not in shrink wrap condition he told me sometimes the company will open for QC and stuff

usually, external HDD will provide u with two USB plugs. one is for data (and power) and one is soley for power. so ya, plug in both if needed.
