help on converting video files to .divx

  any recommended software?i tried apex but my philips dvd player cant detect the file...the manual says it supports divx 3.11,4.X,5.X...thanks...

  avi? rmvb? mkv? ogm?
  
  and wat codec they encoded in?

  mostly avi and rmvb...how to check the encoded codec?
