wireless LAN/router/modem

been looking through the threads...but seems i'm still pretty noob at this...
i've got 2 laptops, each with wireless lan 802.11a/b/g in them
what do i require so that i can enable both to be able to surf broadband internet. I have a singnet broadband plan. Do I require a wireless router or modem?
Also, one of the computer is xp and the other vista... are wireless systems vista enabled yet?
erm one more thing... what is the range of wireless i know that the range differs from model to model but is there a rough guide?
So sorry... really green about such things.

i also have similar prob... just got a laptop today but now i need to get a router for internet.
anyone has an idiot-proof guide to installation of router? i read from hardwarezone that i should get the WR54GL router.. whatever it is. and how do i set the password to prevent ppl from tapping my wireless connection? -

Just go to SIM LIM Square and look for a wireless router that supports 802.11a/b/g...you can get a simple one that cost less than S$80. There are various brands such as SMC.
It should come with a manual that teach you how to set up..basically, you connect your current broadband modem to the wirless router (instead of to your PC now) via a network cable. Once you defined the SSID (an identifier for your laptops to identify the wireless network) and protection such as WEP/WPA (password to share between the wireless router and your laptops so that others like your neighbours cannot use it), that's all. You turn on your broadband modem and your wireless router and you have a wireless LAN at home. -
One more thing. If you still have a desktop that needs wired access, i.e., it does not have wireless capability, look for a wireless router that comes with a few wired network ports. Typically most wireless router have that.
So you can connect the desktop to the wireless router via a network cable and your laptops can connect via wireless.
Diagram wise, something like this:

I would prefer 3Com, Netgear, Dlink or 2Wire. Tested these 4, they are great.
All these routers are easy to setup, just follow the manual given.
If unsure, have another mass outing?!

There's no need for any specific type of router to be used, unless your laptop can only use Wireless A, of which none of the routers in the market could help you. You will have to get an external PC card that supports Wireless B/G in order to set up the router. -
i recommend dlink router since it is quite cheap, and the quality is good.. it can support 802.11g..
after u purchase ur router, just follow the instructions on how to configure the router for the wireless networking.. -

sadly i've bought a linksys router before looking again at this forum.
now i've got a major problem...
my com can detect and even connect to the wireless net work, but i can't seem to connect to the Internet.
I can connect to Internet via LAN cable directly to the modem, but not wirelessly.
Is it because my modem and router 'not talking' haha. But when I put the LAN cable from my com to the router, there is a signal, meaning the router should be able to detect the modem.
Means from tel jack to modem, no problem. From com to wireless router also ok.
But when I use LAN cable from router to PC, doesn't work too..

I'm currently using a cable-modem, on a MAXONLINE PEREMIUM Plan. My modem is the old SAMSUNG SCM 140U.
I wish to switch to a wireless system ( am using a Laptop with 802.11b/g wireless LAN)
Which router should I get?
And do I have to purchase another modem? -
All routers here support wireless standards B and G. You just need a wireless router; there's no need for a new modem.

Linksys... no. Still very unstable.
SMC, Dlink, Netgear, Belkin are all good enough.
Your modem will remain plugged in to the SCV socket as routers don't have this port nor cables for you to plug in.
You will plug in your modem to the cable port of your router (see the instructions in the manual). -
I have another Desktop with no wireless LAN.
So all I have to purchase (in order to connect the desktop wirelessly) is a Wireless-G PC-Card right?
Anything else? -
