What is an icon file?

  to change the display picture of the folder
  
  seems like i can't just take any photo and replace it.

  You got to resize an appropriate picture and then save as .ico files. Certain icon can be changed but other cannot. Just click on the icon and select Properties; if able to change, they'll indicate there and just follow the steps.

  By using photo editor programme like Photoshop or Irfanview.. Not sure if Paint can do the same or not..

  you know when open paint on top got file , then save as , you got 2 blank , 1 for your picture name , another as file type , open up got more such as .jpeg , .gif sorts of things
  
  what he means is you picture , resize it smaller to the proper size , then save as a .ico format

  Take a photo, put inside the folder, then you can choose already.

  he talking about those ''new folder'' icon that was on the desktop , not the folder put inside folder and use the picture inside the folder

  if im more wrong, u are saying that when u double click that icon, it will open up the folder
  
  open a pic that u like in ms paint
  
  u needa create a pic 32x32 pixel(click image, then attributes)
  
  then, #save# it as *youriconname*.ico to somewhere convinent
  
  bear in mind that ico means icon file
  
  then right click the folder u wanna change the pic, select properties
  
  then select advanced tab, at the bottom, u can change the pic to the pic that u just created and name *sth*.ico
  
  *youriconname* and *sth* means u can change anything, no ned put the astreick sign
  
  #save#- in paint, click save as, leave the "save as" selection as 24 bitmap
  then, name the file that u wanna save wid the extension as .ico
