external harddisk question,please help

My operating system is win ME and the internal harddisk is IDE with 20G,ram is sdram 128mb.
So is what is the max volume of harddisk I can use as external harddrive,am I restricted to IDE type of harddrive only.
Can I buy 1.8,2.5,3.5 inch type of internal hardisk with external casing or purely external type of 1.8,2.5,3.5 inch is better.

how come you are only limited to IDE hard disk only
have you check whether do you have any slot, for sata hard disk?
and between, now there are 1 TG external hard disk, and you have to ask yourself, whether do you need so much hard disk for?
now my 250 gb hard disk is almost used up already -
If you are using an external hard disk, the disk space won't be restricted.
If you are going to add an internal hard disk, there might be restrictions. Not too sure on this though. -
what about the speed of the external harddrive,is there a restriction in my case?

u try having two 500 gb hard disk in your computer, and see whether your start up will lag or not lor

have you check whether your motherboard support sata or not....
i find it hard to believe that your motherboard can't support sata hard disk
even for my damn old motherboard, have two sata pin...................
every motherboard can have up to 4 hard disk pin for you to connect to
two IDE and two sata, for my motherboard -
