  want to set up a file server
  
  what are the alternatives to Window Server 2003?
  
  advice and recommendations appreciated!

  Apache.
  
  Apache can run on both Linux and Windows.

  If you mean download files, just enter in the website address will do. But if you mean access it to configure the server, I don't know.

  Access through LAN is easy lah.. remote access I don't really know.
  
  Get the IP address of the server and telnet in.
  
  Command is telnet IP address

  Run linux in console mode (slackware). if you wanna map drives from windows, install samba. if not ftp can oredi.
