geforce 7900gs or 8600gts?

  which is better?
  and can somebody tell me the psu needed to run those cards thanks.

  Well, depends on what you want.
  
  8600GTS is DX10 compatable, meaning if you're switching to vista, you dont have to worry or spend money that much sooner if more DX10-only games comes around the corner.
  
  7900GS is one of the best GPUs in the DX9 gen, have all of the things that makes it a better cards for XP. It can support most of the games on the market now, but if you're going to switch to Vista, then just choose 8600GTS.
  
  Be mindful that your computer determinds what GPU you can use/buy. Both cards needs a maximum of 82W of power to operate(that means u need abt 85W for them to work for safety), also both cards excel in different departments in performance. 8600GTS is more "ATI" than 7900GS, meaning it does better than 7900GS in shading, but still have the cool texturing ability of its grampas.

  absolutely 7900gs
  7900gs can run any dx9 games smoothly in hight quality.
  8600gts is just can run dx10 games but not smoothly.
  
  if u really want to buy a card for dx10 games.8800gts is the best choice now

  I am using a DDR3 7900GS. Don't get 8600GT although it supports DX10.
  
  My memory bandwith for 7900 is 42.2 while 8600GT is 22.4, meaning my memory data transfer of video memory to CPU is greater than the 8600GT.
  
  My texture fill rate is 9.billion pixels per sec while 8600 is 8.6. Even though the difference is small, the bits and pieces add up to form a huge difference.
  
  If you really want to get a DX10 card, get the 8800GTS or wait till end of the year, not much games to support the technology now.
