  All high priority updates are needed... to patch the system...
  
  Important updates are not compulsory; it depends on what MS softwares are installed.
  
  For the .NET Framework 1.1, it's not needed unless you are playing games or is a programmer. Certain program use the latest framework, so it's necessary to get the latest.
  
  There are also various security updates to 1.0, so it will be recommended to download the latest one.

  As a side note, you do NOT need to install the update titled: Windows Genuine Advantage Notification.
  
  Once installed on your computer, it starts phoning home to Microsoft at a set time-interval to check whether your copy of Windows is a legit or cracked one.
  
  There is another variant which uses ActiveX controls(works only in internet explorer) and is called: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. This uses a ActiveX control to check whether your copy of Windows is a legit or cracked one whenever you download items from http://support.microsoft.com or the Microsoft Download Center.

  nope.. but then genuine advantage allow u to do updates... .Netframework definitely not required...

  Note: Genuine advantage got two types.
  Notification and Validation.
  
  Most users should not need to install Notification. It nags you about whether your computer is running a legit version or not. Later versions of Noti..... have undergone several changes.

  Yes. However, you can only install critical updates.
