using hd with windows as ext

  will it corrupt the registry? Also, can it be used on the original cpu as the startup hd again?

  ie pluck out the hd that contains win98 from comp A(cos its system cant be on). then place it in an ext enclosure and use it as an ext hdd on a win xp comp B. once data retrieved, can the hdd still work on its original system comp A? also, will the presence of another os prevent comp B from detecting it?

  Internal HDDs will never be external. They are known as secondary HDDs.
  
  If it's an IDE, you will have to set it to slave mode before putting in to computer B. Computer B should have no problems detecting it.
  
  The reverse, however isn't true. Older versions of Windows can't detect newer version of Windows files. A new version of Windows has to be installed before trying out with an older one.
  
  You can retrieve the data, but the OS won't work because it's corrupted. However, chances are, your files aren't, so you can recover them after slaving it.

  i try to make sense in what TS said:
  
  If u try to retrieve files from Comp A internal HDD by placing it into an external case to transfer to comp B. Then yes, it is safe. provided both system are fat32 or and ntfs (if u use windows)
  
  Provided the files u referring are non-system critical files like doc, ppt, mp3. Then u can place Comp A internal HDD back to Comp A without any probs.

  yeah, that's precisely what i meant. so does that mean the system files in the ext hdd will not cause any problems to comp B? btw, i'm only trying to duplicate the files (doc, mpg, mp3) over.

  The system files won't have any effects on computer B, so long you didn't transfer them out to Computer B.

  so will comp B has any effect on the system files? cos i may wanna try to savage the old system (ie putting back the hdd to where it was).
