Discussion: DIY a PC or buy branded ones

Inspired by this article.
What do you feel?
Do you prefer to DIY a PC so that it is clean and comes with no other software except the OS?
Or buy a branded one from Acer, HP, Dell, IBM and the likes which comes installed with trial programs that they think are useful and with a hit of a few buttons restore Windows back to factory state?

i will DIY.
have been DIY-ing my pc all along...........
i choose wat is required and within my budget
total cost still cheaper than a branded pc with the same specs -
for my next comp, i'll try to DIY. branded = not cost effective

DIY for me... I prefer the flexibility... and the cost.
I do not believe in State of the Art systems because I prefer to change computers every two years.
Say you need $2500 for the state of the art system (Core2 3.5mhz for example) but you spend $1200 for a Dual core 2.5mhz.
Two years later you get a Core4, for example, for another $1200 and in total you spend $2400 but you end up with Core4 while the guy that bout Core2 for $2500 is still a Core2... -

im trying to get my new com at SIMLIM but still have some doubts to clarify..
amd n intel.. which would be a better choice???
what spec of com can i get with budget of 700 (excluding monitor keyboard all these)?
any recommendation shop or place?

With a $700 budget, you can get a good motherboard + processor, assuming that this doesn't include all the necessities of a PC and that you want a brand new one. -

My view...
I prefer DIY, reason being I get to customize it the way I want it to be. Generally, it's cheaper, unless the system is top-end. In that sense, a manufacturer will be able to help you save more bucks as they get the components directly from a distributor.
If there's any reason why I choose pre-built PCs, it's because of convenience. Recovery is in a hidden partition, press a few buttons and done. Some softwares bundled are the full version, which saves money buying. Drivers are readily available, just go their website and download. You don't have to do a lot of preliminary steps to find out what is suitable, what is not, then get the right stuffs. -

Anyway, nowadays systems need at least a 400W to make sure upgrading of components is smooth. Those with around 300W often run into some problems.
The best example is HP. They are forever under-powered. -

See, all this discussion << circles all the posts above this one >> is what I don't want to be involved in and that is why I chose to buy a "branded" PC , although the brand I chose is not high-end

depends on you actually...
wether you can afford it or whether you enjoy trouble-shooting...
If you can afford it, you can ask the "branded" coy to customise according to your specs...
If you enjoy troubleshooting, you can assemble your own pc and enjoy the work of getting every component to work with each other...
I always get "branded" as troubleshooting is too troublesome for me. I would ask them to customise what I want and see whether they can do it for me...
In the past, I try asking compaq to install a cd-writer on the pc about 9 years back but they failed to do so... So, I got back my refund and got a hp which comes with one... -
I prefer DIY as you can choose which brand of the parts that go into your system. For the 1 button recovery/restore to factory condition you can brought the software at $90+ to $100+.

I will advise my friend to buy got brand PC. Because :-
1) PC have reached to a saturated technology liao... No matter, how much u improve... the speed is not going to be much difference depends on application. Errr for normal use application, it is not going to be much difference unless there is a break through in new technology lah...
2) Furthermore nowadays, the price of PC have slashed till unbelievable compared few years ago... Hence, DIY yr own PC does not really save much if yr salary belongs to middle grp income...
3) Brand PC also looks nicer when people visit yr house. The style of tat brand PC is trendy
4) If his PC got problem, I can direct his problem to Dell, HP or blah blah... No need to trouble myself to help him

I am the stubborn type... I have been DIY my own PC for more than 10 yrs liao... Actually, I m tempted to buy brand PC 1 but in the end I choose my pride as an engineer over temptation... >< -

1. A lot of applications are still optimized for 32-bit platforms and single core CPUs, which is why there isn't any improvements. Between 2005 and 2007, I've seen a great improvement for 32-bit programs on single core CPU. However, the same can't be said for duo core or even quad core CPU and 64-bit platforms PC. Although some programs are specifically for such platforms, the programs more or less are going the way of their predecessor.
