Serial / Parallel hardware

I just noticed that new motherboards these days come without serial and parallel ports.
What are we to do with those hardware (eg, printers, scanners)? Is there still some way of connection? Or are those destined for the dump
?

External cards, usually PCI. But then again, they are also harder to find nowadays.

You mean a serial and parallel port card? I have got to check my motherboard whether there's any free PCI left.
Is there a USB connector instead that is able to accept a serial and/or parallel hardware? That would be great.
