how to really save up disk space on a laptop?

  as above.. lets say i install a file then after that i dont need it liao. but if i uninstall le why still got some space being used up? if this goes on, i will have to reformat the whole laptop again... what should i do?

  1. Registry takes up space. Registry is more than the Registry Viewer, there is actually quite a few files which Registry Viewer grabs the files from.
  
  2. There's something called logs. Some programs don't remove logs on uninstallation.
  
  3. There are other hidden folders which these programs created, mainly for configuration. These folders are not gone on uninstallation as well, so that they could take the settings of your previous version and not let you re-configure everything again. For lovers of Firefox, this should be very familiar as your profile corrupts all too often.They are known as Application Data folder, and could be accessed by typing %appdata% into the Run dialog box.
  
  4. Lastly, there's the Event Viewer which keeps track of everything you do. Again, the Event Viewer grabs its logs from various files and in real-time as well.

  Of course I will delete the registry entries and those unrelated folders. Log files, if there, can be deleted as well.
  
  I don't compress my files unless necessary. Files compression doesn't really save a lot of space as they are already compressed in one way or another.

  Shouldn't have any side effects... and the registry... no point doing it if you have no idea how. Windows is registry and registry is Windows. Once it's corrupted, you can only format.

  do i need a software to do that? cos somehow i found a software in my hard disk i think its a preset. it says something like registry cleaner.

  u clear ur temporary internet files also lo... then delete off those program folders u already uninstalled... backup files u already not using... u keep movies?

  Vista completely re-build, I don't expect it to work really well. You can try ATF Cleaner, but I doubt that works as well.
