RAM for laptop

My laptop (IBM R52) is currently running on 2 piece 256 Mb RAM. I'm thinking of changing the external one to perhaps a 1 GB RAM. Since there are only 2 slots, I will have to take out 1 piece of 256 Mb RAM. I'm wondering whether it is easy to sell the RAM 2nd hand...
Also, for the current computer specifications:
Memory:
* 64-bit Double Data Rate (DDR) non-parity SDRAM memory
* PC2-4200 at 533MHz
* Supports up to two 1GB SDRAM SO DIMMs
* Supports maximum memory up to 2GB
Is it advisable to load my laptop up to 2GB if I were to do it one day?

what's ur os? if it's xp then 1gb should be enough, but for vista 2gb above

I did my attachment there, and I will be going there to work after graduation mah...
