JAVA programming help needed!

  Hey Hi,
  
  I have came across a few terms in java programming
  
  For Instance,
  
  writer.write( " Jackson" + "\n") ;
  writer.write( " James"+ "\n") ;
  writer.write( " Dick" + "\r\n"
  
  Okay now, may anyone enlighten me what does the "\r" and the "\n" stands and means please...
  
  I tried googling but the results seemed futile.
