laptop cant read portable hard disk

Hi can anybody help, my portable hard disk working fine then so happen that my computer is unable to read/explore my harddisk when connected.
It shows up in "My Computer" but always under "F: local disk" even when i did not connect it via the F drive usb port and further more i had long renamed my harddisk !
I had test check with my frens laptop and usb cable the end conclusion is the issue lies with the hard disk ...
the hard disk will run with a steady green light but after i click on the "F: local disk" icon ...the computer will hang...
Help or advice is very much appreciated...cos I had lots of work material inside...
Someone suggested a change of hard disk casing...will it help?

sounds like its gonna fail. dont think a face lift is gonna stop it frm failing. if i were u, i wld start getting money for a new ext hdd.......
