There's a whole list to surfing the net safely, but for online banking, here's some quick ones:
1. Scan your computer for any potential malwares, esp. keyloggers (which basically log your keystrokes), before typing in any form of important information. And remove them of course.
2. Use a firewall to add an layer of security. Even when your personal information is stolen, they can't go anywhere if they are denied access to the Internet. A firewall does just that.
3. Obviously, don't do online banking in a net cafe or on a public wireless hotspot.
4. The website which you do banking on should have URLs starting with "https://" on pages with login forms and account summary pages where you can carry out actual transactions. If not, there is a high chance that it is a fraud site.
5. I won't say that Firefox is any safer than IE [b]if you surf the net to do online banking only. But if you are the other 99.9999% of those who surfs the net and at least once visited other sites, esp those that display pond pics, you ought to use something else other than IE. I recommend Opera. =D
