Salt and Water

  Hey I need some help here
  
  When we mix salt into water, often we dont see an increase in volume.
  Is it the H2O molecule thats going into the crystal structure of the NaCl structure and pushes the Na and Cl apart while the bond between Na and Cl is not broken
  
  or
  
  is it NaCl disociates into Na+ and Cl- and then goes in between the gaps between H2O molecules?
  
  HELP!!!!!!!!

  i WAS certain until i itchy backside and go read some internet article which makes me more confused.
