my book says its protective layer as it forms a thin film e.g. zinc layer over another metal such as tin.
whereas, sacrificial protection is more of attaching a more reactive metal to a less reactive metal. the more reactive metal will corrode in place of the less reactive metal.
then again, both protective layer and sacrificial method may be accepted i guess.
